THE AUTOPSY OF A BOOK,
OF AN AUTHOR
AND OF A CHARACTER
Creature, An Autopsy, a solo performance by Bruna Longo, is a work of friction between the novel Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus and the life of its author Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin (Shelley).
In 2013, actress Bruna Longo reads Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus, for the first time. Haunted by the creature's absolute solitude, she decided, in 2017, to embark on an adaptation of the work for the stage from the point of view of this character. The paths of research are often mysterious and sometimes something is sought and something else finds us. In trying to speak about the creature, every action, every word, every pain met Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin (later Shelley), the young woman who had written the book. Her story was imposed through the narrative she herself wrote. The work in the rehearsal room begins in February 2018. A physical dramaturgy is created based on two narratives: that of the book and that of Mary's life, looking for the points of friction, and having as frame the constant presence of death. In June 2018, already in the midst of rehearsals, the actress is invited by the Bodleian Libraries at University of Oxford in England to have full access to Shelley’s original documents (diaries, letters and manuscripts), and visits the places relevant to her life in England. Returning to the rehearsal room, two years after the beginning of the research, the performance that was never intended to be a biography of the creature or the author, became an autopsy of a book, of an author and of a character, revealing the entrails, arteries, musculature of personal and universal pains.
